Regìa di Jacques Demy (1967)

Musical più “classico” di Demy, c’è anche Gene Kelly. La versione italiana uscita in sala era più corta di mezz’ora e si intitolava Josephine, che sarebbe il personaggio della Deneuve (Delphine, nella versione originale adesso disponibile in dvd con sottotitoli italiani; anche il personaggio di Jacques Riberolles, in originale Guillaume, nella versione italiana diventava François…mah).
Nella puntata di ieri di Stracult, Nino Castelnuovo (protagonista del film precedente di Demy) ha detto che avrebbe dovuto partecipare a questo film e che era già in parola per andare a Londra per studiare danza sotto la supervisione di Gene Kelly: poi però spinto dalla sua agenzia che voleva renderlo più conosciuto al pubblico italiano, accettò di fare Renzo Tramaglino (quel coglionazzo, come lo definisce Castelnuovo ormai da anni nelle interviste) e dovette rinunciare al film di Demy.
Un film assolutamente incantevole. Preso (in un mercatino dell’usato!) anni fa il dvd francese (che ha pure i sottotitoli italici), a soli 2 euro. Gran qualità audio-video (è stato restaurato), attori perfetti (ma che quasi mai cantano con la loro voce…), e un Gene Kelly ultracinquantenne (e con parrucchino) ma ancora vispissimo nel ballo. Insomma, il cinema “romantico-musicale” di Demy al suo meglio. In una parola:MAGNIFIQUE!
Young Girls, like The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, was shot on Eastmancolor film stock, which was notorious for its instability. The bright saturated colors of the original release prints faded quickly, often within five years or less.
Jacques Demy’s widow, the filmmaker Agnès Varda, was the driving force behind the successful restoration of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and she and her family were equally determined to make sure Young Girls was also restored so that future audiences might enjoy the film. The town of Rochefort helped pay some of the costs of the restoration as well.
Varda and the film company Cine-Tamaris searched for the original materials on Young Girls but were unable to find any black and white prints of the tricolor selection that would make three-strip color restoration possible. (This was the method that had restored The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg to such intense glory for its re-release in 1995.) However, they did find a fine grain “security” print in good condition that was used to make a new negative, from which Varda was able, with the assistance of Bruno Patin, to review and restore the original colors shot by shot.
Varda had been on set for the filming of the movie in 1966, and well remembered the original look and color of the film’s sets. Without Jacques or cinematographer Ghislain Cloquet alive to assist, the task fell entirely to Varda’ s memory.
It helped that she had shot a great deal of 16mm footage of the making of the film, much of which can be seen in her documentary Les Demoiselles Ont Eu 25 Ans (The Young Girls Turn 25), which she put together after filming the festivities that the town of Rochefort organized in 1992.
For the restoration of the sound, the tracks were digitally re-mixed and resynchronized. The timing was re-checked as well, and finally a new sound optical negative was then made for use on the composite prints, as well as for a new video master.
Mi dispiace. Era un 'attrice di grande fascino ma soprattutto di grande bravura. Peccato che una buona parte dei film da lei interpretati non sia disponibile.
Oltre al film in oggetto la ricordo in Operazione Cicero, La vedova elettrica, La gang dell’anno santo.
Io invece sapevo di una vecchissima vhs GVR (anzi CVR). Comunque, se si intitola “Josephine”, è la versione italiana, tagliata e manipolata, uno scempio. Raccomando piuttosto l’acquisto del br francese, un vero splendore.

Buona segnalazione grazie sarà certamente l’edizione francese con l’audio delle vecchie vhs integrato dai sottotitoli se va bene i:D insomma il solito lavoro altamente professionale come le edizioni Criterion.
