Now… question is: is it an Hongkongese documentary or an American production, in the end?
I tend to believe that the original documentary, which has a sequel with the same technical cast and narrating voice in the same year or in 1983 (中國奇觀續集 which should be an alternative tile for 人獸奇觀 listed on Douban) is 100% Hongkonghese and it should be a full length documentary for a couple of reasons: first of all there are the two cinema posters which would make no sense for a short 16-minutes movie), then the comment of that user saying “it’s a classic” should let believe that it could have an actual theatre screening back in 1982. And it may also had some success back at that time.
So, what about this supposed American edition made in the same year titled “Wonders of China”?
I think - but it’s just my opinion - that the original Hongkonghese documentary was bought by Walt Disney Imagineering / WDI which cut and adapted it as “Wonders of China” in a heavily shortened version.
Also the subtitle in Chinese is quite unusual and it may reflects the original title from which the material was taken.
So, if this thinking is logic, it means that this Jeff Blyth listed as director, was actually the editor in charge. Possibly supported by Keye Luke who served as translator or narrating voice for the American (shortened) version.
So, yes, in the end you were actually right. Apparently it’s always the same movie known with a few Chinese title variants and with an American edited version
