“Travolti…” I enjoyed especially M. Melato and the ending.
“Pascualino…”, I enjoyed mostly from this movie the unusual way of portraying Hollocaust. Also the original enviroment where Pascualino lived with his sisters, sharing the room with that kind of textil factory…
“Amarcord” is in my list.
“Amici miei”, I saw a bit of number 2 only, from the begining, but at some point I stoped watching because I don’t like this kind of humor, I got a deep disconfort… Has too much emphasis of laughing about the disgrace of others, or mocking others, or profiting from others…the characters are portrait like funny guys, heroes in a way, and they are hardly an example to follow. Definietely someone like that would never become “amici mie”.

It was like a big bang for Italian cinema! A revolution!!! As 8 1/2.
A great movie is also Rocco e i suoi fratelli. I also recommend you to see Una giornata particolare and every film with Marcello Mastroianni you can find out. Watch also La prima notte di quiete and La Chiave.

Of course I have seen “La Dolce Vita” but I really didn’t enjoy it, same goes for “8 1/2”.

Regarding “Una giornata particolare”, I’ve seen it more than 30 years ago, but I want to see it again because I don’t remember anything about it any longer. I have to say that Ettore Scola is one of my favorite movie directors from Italy. Some of my favorite movies from him:

In general I don’t like spaghetti westerns and giallos, but some I like. I judge each movie individualy. My problem with most of the movies of this genere is that they are like “comics” and I’m not into that.
Regarding where I live, I’m from Germany, I understand Italian with no problem (as I watch the italian movies in Italian and watch Italian TV daily), but I don’t write it too well.
Oh, by the way, from time to time check again the “original” list I made because I always keep updating it every time I find a movie I like.

Hmmm… it’s strange!
‘‘La prima notte di quiete’’ (Indian Summer in US, Le Professeur in France, but it came out also in Germany in 1973) is a very fascinating film, directed by Valerio Zurlini, with a great Alain Delon as Daniele Dominici, an Italian teacher who’s like a ''damned
‘’ french poet as Rimbaud or similar. He works in an high school of Rimini and he will fell in love with one of his schoolgirls… it’s a great drama full of autumnal atmosphere.
‘‘La chiave’’… maybe it didn’t came out in German theatres in 1983 and it doesn’t exist a German DVD edition of the movie… It’s so famous in Italy!
It’s a masterpiece of erotic cinema directed by one of the greatest directors in movie history, Tinto Brass (famous abroad, also in Germany, for ‘‘Caligula’’ which he didn’t recognize as one of his movies due to the problems and contrasts during its production) starring Stefania Sandrelli (‘‘Divorzio all’italiana’’ ‘‘Sedotta e abbandonata’’ ‘‘C’eravamo tanto amati’’) one of the most beautiful Italian actresses. A great movie, oh yes.

What’s strange? That I haven’t seen all the italian movies available to me, hahaha.
I don’t work for the movie industry, why you asked me this?
Yes, I have Italian origin but “remote”, my closest italian ancestor came to my country around 1850, but nobody really kept the tradition, I’m the one in the family to “revitalize” it, so to say. It’s something that grew up in me, somehow inadvertedly, in the last seven years.
And, yes, I love Italy.! Currently I’m going every summer there, and I have lots of friends here from Italy as well. As you probably know, TODAY, Germany is the country with more Italians in the world!
If you ask me I would like to retire in Italy, I’m not too far in age to do it, but too far with money to be able to make it. But who knows?

In Germany there is a culture and a great love for Spaghetti Westerns, and respect for cinema in general, also Italian.
I also like ‘‘Schulmadchen-Report’’ movies (they’re not Fassbinder, Wenders or Herzog, but I like 'em): me and my friends want to call our rockband ‘‘Schulmadchen Report’’!

Regarding the profesion, I understand why you asked me now. My oppinion is that if you can get into PROBABLY ANY profesion more or less DEEPLY you would realize it has nothing to do with the average perception people, “especialists”, etc have of it. And of course you would realize newspapers, etc are like COMICS too. At least that is what I can tell you from my experience of my profession and a couple of “deep” hobbies I have.
Sorry, I don’t know much about German filmakers, I know more about American and Latin American films.
But, please, let me recommend you a little German Movie that is not included in the directors you mentioned: “Halbe Treppe” (in USA “Grill Point”).
My favorite Herzog, of the ones I’ve seen, is: [b]“Stroszek” /b, not so much for the visual but the story. From visual point, my favorites are: “Cobra Verde” and “Fitzcarraldo”.

Have you ever seen a Pasolini movie? If not, I recommend you to see Teorema, Accattone, Uccellacci e Uccellini, Il Decameron, I Racconti di Canterbury, Il fiore delle mille e una notte (the last 3 films are the most famous in its production all over the world- and they’re so fun!). And if you have ‘‘a stomach made of iron’’, see Salò.
But if you want to relax and have some fun, see ‘‘Jetzt treibt sie’s auch noch mit dem Pauker’’ (La liceale seduce i professori which means ‘‘The schoolgirl seduces her teachers’’) starring Gloria Guida (Italian blonde sex-goddess!) Lino Banfi, Alvaro Vitali… it’s great fun!
“Halbe Treppe” (in USA “Grill Point”). In Italy it’s called ‘‘Catastrofi d’amore’’, I’ll see it soon! It’s similar to a movie I loved so much: Lost in translation. (for IMDb…)

I’ve seen some Passolini movies, 'though I didn’t enjoyed his cinema too much. Of the ones I’ve seen (just a couple) I prefear “Mamma Roma”.
“Lost in Translation” is not at all like “Halbe Treppe”, personally I prefear the German Movie (way more). Halbe Treppe has a freshnes that is not easy to find in American or EVEN Italian film making, it’s closer to Spanish film making with German morals (I can say anything, anyway I’m not in the Cinema industrie, so, what do I know…? hahaha). I think as one grows older and watch the movie again it might have even a deeper meaning, may be not 'though…
From Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation) try, if you haven’t yet, “The Virgin Suicides”, I liked that one.
